Russia annexed the Crimea and Sevastopol after the military blockade of Ukrainian military units and illegal referendum on 16 March 2014. The annexation of Crimea by Russia is not recognised by Ukraine and most countries of the world.

In connection with these events, the Western countries, particularly USA, Canada, Japan and the EU have imposed sanctions against Russia. They several times renewed and tightened.

The leaders of the countries members of the European Union summit in Brussels agreed to extend for six months sanctions against Russia for aggression in Ukraine. The decision must be issued a legal act of the EU Council. It will enter into force on 1 August.
