Often infected with coronavirus COVID-19 and men die than women because they have higher concentrations of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (АПФ2) in the blood.

It is due to this enzyme, the infection can enter the body, said researchers from the European society of cardiology (ESC). The results were published in the European Heart Journal.

Professor of cardiology, University medical center Groningen (UMCG) Adrian Voors stressed that АПФ2 plays “a crucial role in the progression of lung diseases associated with COVID-19”.

The high content of this enzyme in men was able to identify the results of blood tests of more than 3.5 thousand patients with heart failure conducted prior to a pandemic.

“When we found that one of the best bioindicators, АПФ2, was much higher in men than in women, I realized that this may explain why, among men, the risk of death from COVID-19 is higher than among women,” said one of the study’s authors Dr. Isaya Itself.

As noted in the Society of cardiology, АПФ2 is not only in lung but also in heart, kidney and tissues lining the blood vessels, especially the high level observed in the testicles.

The last factor, suggested by experts, could partially explain the higher concentrations АПФ2 in men.

As he wrote OBOZREVATEL, scientists from China have suggested that COVID-19 can be transmitted sexually. Eugene Komorowski commented on the results of the study and stated that to limit sexual activity still not worth it.
