“Nord stream – 2” is the second pipeline that will connect Russia with Germany via the Baltic sea

The Ministry of economy of Germany has not confirmed the information that the official Berlin has received advance assurances from the US on the non-proliferation sanctions against Russia on the gas pipeline project “Nord stream-2”. About this informed the press-Secretary of the Ministry of economy Beata Baron in response to the request of DW.

She recalled that in October 2017 during the German-American consultations, it was agreed on that the US are not pre-plan to expand sanctions on the prisoners until August of last year, the projects in the gas sector. However, whether this decision is currently unknown.

Today, the Baron announced that the U.S. assured Germany – the sanctions imposed against Russia will not affect the construction of “Nord stream – 2”.

“Nord stream – 2” is the second pipeline that will connect Russia with Germany under the Baltic sea. The length of the trail is more than 1,200 km, the new pipeline’s capacity will be 55 billion m3 of gas per year. The cost of the project is 9.5 billion euros, half funded by the Russian “Gazprom” and five European companies. In “Gazprom” predicts that “Nord stream – 2” will be put into operation before the end of 2019.

The authorities of Ukraine, Poland, Hungary, Moldova, Romania, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia are considered “Nord stream – 2” the threat to Europe’s energy security. The Prime Minister of Poland Mateusz Morawiecki called the pipeline a new hybrid weapon of Russia against the West.

Germany, Finland and Sweden were allowed to build the pipeline on its territory. Denmark – yet.

Kiev insists that Russia must save the transit of gas through territory of Ukraine after the construction of the “Nord stream – 2”. According to the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, the supply of gas through Ukraine will depend on economic feasibility.

According to the American magazine Foreign Policy, the US may soon impose sanctions on five European companies involved in the project “Northern stream – 2”.
