Voronchenko: Navy on alert

In the sea of Azov can establish a base Military-naval forces (naval forces) of Ukraine, said in an interview with “Radio Liberty” the commander of the Navy Igor Voronchenko.

“I have just returned from Berdyansk and Mariupol. There is an agreement (though still verbal) on the establishment of the Azov naval base”, – he said.

Voronchenko responded affirmatively to the question, does Ukraine have resources for possible reflection attacks in the Azov sea.

“I can assure you that the situation in the sea of Azov, we analyze, control, appropriate countermeasures worked. Forces to repel a possible attack have. Navy on alert,” – said the commander of the Navy.

18 may, Russia has restricted the shipping for the Ukrainian ships in the Azov sea because of the firings. Restrictions touched that part of the sea closest to Zaporozhye and Donetsk regions of Ukraine. The ban was in force on 23 may.

On 18 June the Secretary of the Council of national security and defense of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov said that in the sea of Azov possible provocations after the increase in amphibious potential.

The Treaty 2003, provides that the sea of Azov, an inland waters of Ukraine and the Russian Federation, is divided by the line of the state border in accordance with the agreement between the parties. According to the document, merchant ships and warships and other government ships under the flag of the Russian Federation or Ukraine, operated for non-commercial purposes, use in the Azov sea and the Kerch Strait freedom of navigation.

Agreement on the delimitation of the sea border line and has not been signed.
