American company Holtec International has delivered to Ukraine the first transshipment container for transportation and long term storage of spent fuel assemblies of nuclear power plants. This was reported by the press service of the Rivne nuclear power plant on Wednesday, 5 December.

It is noted that the plant started testing of the equipment supplied by Holtec International for the project Centralized repository for spent nuclear fuel (facility).

“The work begins with the inspection and test transfer cask HI-TRAC 190, which is overloaded spent nuclear fuel (SNF) from the at-reactor spent fuel pool aging nuclear power plant in transportation casks, HI-STAR for further transportation to the facility”, – is spoken in the message .

Container HI-TRAC and accessories needed to operate it was put to the RNPP from the USA where they are manufactured at the plant НMD (Holtec Manufacturing Division) of the company Holtec International on the technology which is under construction facility.

“The beginning of the test container HI-TRAC is an important step towards the implementation of strategically important for Ukraine’s energy security project”, – underlined in the message.

The multipurpose container may be placed 31 developed fuel Assembly from the spent fuel of VVER-1000 or 85 assemblies for VVER-440.

“For the first time in Ukraine and worldwide for hexagonal fuel of Russian design developed corresponding equipment technology company Holtec International. It is a container type, which are double-barrier that meets international requirements on nuclear and radiation safety and dual purpose, because intended for the transportation and storage of spent nuclear fuel,” – said the President of NNEGC Energoatom Yuriy Nedashkovsky.

He added that the containers have a life of guaranteed long-term storage of SNF for 100 years.

We will remind, last year the government of Ukraine approved the project of construction of centralized repository for spent nuclear fuel of VVER-type reactors of domestic nuclear power plants. Its commissioning is planned for March 2020.
