The decision on Hong Kong supported 2878 deputies of vsekitajsky meeting of national representatives
The highest legislative body of China – the national people’s Congress the national people’s Congress (NPC) on may 28 adopted a resolution on national security of Hong Kong, said the Hong Kong edition South China Morning Post.
The vote took place before the closing of the annual session of the Assembly and a few hours after U.S. Secretary of state Mike Pompeo said that Hong Kong no longer has an Autonomous status.
Officially, the document that took the meeting, called the “decision on the establishment and improvement of legal system and enforcement mechanisms for the protection of state security in Hong Kong”. He was supported 2878 deputies, one was against and six abstained.
Now the standing Committee of vsekitajsky meeting of national representatives will be able to pass a law that would give Beijing more powers to combat separatism, Subversion, terrorism and conspiring with foreign influence on autonomy. In addition, the Hong Kong government should create new institutions to protect the sovereignty, while the mainland of the Agency will be able to work in the city if necessary.
The NPC standing Committee meets every two months. Next meeting is tentatively scheduled in June. So June is the earliest month when the new legislation for Hong Kong can move forward, said the publication.
Critics in Hong Kong condemned the plan, believing that it would undermine the principle of “one country, two systems” and will destroy the status of Hong Kong as a global financial centre.
Chinese state Agency Xinhua said that the authorities in Beijing decided to adopt similar legislation “after a prolonged social instability and the escalation of street violence that plunged Hong Kong into a difficult situation upon its return to the Motherland in 1997”. In Hong Kong, I believe the Chinese authorities are active organizations advocating for the independence of the region, and there has been a “blatant intervention of external forces”, so you need “efforts at the state level to create and improve the legal system.”
Hong Kong is a separate administrative region within China. Britain handed control of Hong Kong to China in 1997. According to the Sino-British joint Declaration and the basic law of Hong Kong, the territory granted broad autonomy until 2047 under the formula “one country, two systems”. It guarantees freedoms that are not enjoyed in China.
In the summer of 2019 in Hong Kong began anti-government protests in connection with the intention to pass a law that would allow extradition at the request of Chinese authorities. This document was revoked, but the protests continued. Their participants demanded to reduce the influence of mainland China on the city politics, early election, investigate the actions of police and an Amnesty for detained demonstrators. The epidemic of coronavirus suspended action, but at the end of April they resumed.
