November 28, the Zaporizhzhya city Council did not support the decision on granting the Russian language the regional status in the city. It is reported by UNN.

Supported the draft decision 22 deputies. Votes “against” it was not, but not voted 19 deputies.

In the city Council of Zaporizhia 64 members.

Regional Russian language was recognized in Zaporozhye at the session, which took place on 5 September 2012.

The law “On principles of state language policy” (the law of Kolesnichenko – Kivalov) was adopted by the Verkhovna Rada on 3 July 2012. On 8 August it was signed by then-President Viktor Yanukovych. The document greatly expanded the use of regional languages, if the number of speakers was at least 10% of the population of a certain region, and in some instances less than 10%.

In February 2014, immediately after the victory of Euromaidan, Parliament abolished the law, but acting President Oleksandr Turchynov declared that will not sign the Parliament’s decision.

In July 2014 57 people’s deputies filed a submission on the constitutionality of the law in the constitutional Court, on 10 October of the same year, opened the proceedings, in November 2016, the court proceeded to consideration of the views of MPs.

14 December 2016 KSU has completed a trial in open court and passed to the closed part of the meeting.

28 February 2018, the constitutional Court of Ukraine ruled that the adoption of the law Kolesnichenko – Kivalov is not consistent with the procedure for the consideration of bills by the Verkhovna Rada.

The decision on granting the regional status to the Russian language was abolished, in particular in Kherson and Mykolaiv region.
