The Verkhovna Rada adopted the bill on the termination of the Agreement on friendship, cooperation and partnership between Ukraine and the Russian Federation.

For a decision voted by 277 deputies at the plenary session of Parliament on Thursday, December 6 (to view a roll-call vote, prostrate the page to the end).

According to the document, the contract shall be terminated from 1 April 2019.

“Termination of the Treaty of friendship frees Ukraine from any obligation in respect to its performance and does not affect the rights, obligations or legal situation of Ukraine, which emerged as the result of the execution of the Treaty prior to its termination, in accordance with article 70 of the Vienna Convention on the law of treaties”, – stated in the bill.

In particular, the document was voted by 108 MPs from the faction of the BPP, 72 – from the faction “people’s front”, 34 – independent, 17 – “Samopomich”, 4 – “Renaissance”, 16 – “Batkivshchyna”, 6, “the Will of the people”.

As reported by OBOZREVATEL, September 21 Ukraine has officially informed Russia of breaking the Treaty of friendship. The Minister of foreign Affairs of Ukraine called the this event is very important because in the note in detail and substantiates all the Russian violations of the provisions of this agreement.

September 17, Poroshenko enacted the decision of national security Council and defence of Ukraine (NSDC) on the termination of the contract. On 6 September, the Council supported the initiative of the President.

The abolition of the Treaty of friendship surfaced in Ukrainian politics due to the deterioration of the situation in the Azov sea. From the middle of spring the Russian coast guard massively slowed down trading ships, which were moving to or from Ukrainian ports, and on November 25 the Russian ship rammed the tug of the Ukrainian Navy in the Black sea, then Russia used the weapon against the Ukrainian warships seized three boats with 24 sailors.

On the background of these events, Poroshenko said that Ukraine has already completed preparations for termination of the contract. As the President says, is the fault of Moscow, the agreement has lost any meaning.

Recall that the Treaty was signed in 1997 and was the main document that determined the relations between the two countries as “strategic”. Moreover, the Treaty specifically enshrines the territorial boundaries of the two countries, as well as recognize their inviolability.
