“If it were possible to avoid unwanted pregnancies and if everyone could decide when and how much he will have children, the annual population growth rate would decrease by a quarter”, – underlined in the Fund.

According to the organization, unwanted are two of the five pregnancies. “Particularly affected girls aged 15 to 19 in developing countries: every second unwanted pregnancy. More than half of these unwanted pregnancies lead to abortions, many of which are dangerous,” said the Fund’s managing Director Ian Kreuzberg.

Every second woman in Africa has access to contraception. “Many girls and women have no voice when it comes to sex and number of children. They are often subjected to sexual violence, early marriage against their will and forced to become pregnant”, the report says.

According to UN projections, due to these problems, the population of Africa South of the Sahara by 2050 will almost double: from 1.3 billion to 2.5 billion.

The Fund added that the coronavirus pandemic exacerbates the problem of gender-based violence and may lead to surge in unwanted pregnancies.

In April 2020, the United Nations Fund for population noted that the epidemic, the quarantine and the ensuing economic crisis can lead to the fact that more than 47 million women in low and middle income may lose access to contraceptives, which will produce about 7 million unwanted pregnancies.
