Ukraine is currently interested more in military aid from the United States than in the economic. This was stated by the Minister of Finance of Ukraine Alexander danyluk in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.
According to him, Ukraine is now more interested in helping the U.S. “military supply” and the preservation of sanctions against Russia, than in the provision of credit guarantees.
The Minister added that looks optimistic on Ukraine’s relations with the new Administration of U.S. President Donald trump, especially after the United States began to conduct a more assertive policy towards Russia.
Ukraine since the beginning of the military aggression of Russia in the spring of 2014 is holding negotiations with Western countries on the supply of lethal weapons. At the moment, the US supply Kiev only non-lethal aid (including armored Humvee vehicles, the unmanned RQ-11B Raven and counter-battery radars), and assist in the preparation of the Ukrainian military.
In February 2016 at the time commander of NATO forces in Europe General Philip Breedlove has submitted recommendations to the government of the USA on granting Ukraine lethal weapons. In April, the U.S. permanent representative to the UN Samantha Power said that economic and diplomatic pressure on Russia is more effective than the use of Ukraine of lethal weapons to resolve the conflict in the Donbas.
8 December 2016, the U.S. Senate approved by a majority vote the budget of the United States for 2017, which includes $350 million of assistance to Ukraine in the defense sector. 44th us President Barack Obama signed this document.
