Director of the NABU Artem Sytnik declared that “felt that sooner or later will be such a blast and will be a counterattack, which will actually cross out the last three years, which took place in Ukraine, to undermine the reforms that were started, cross out possible international cooperation”. So he responded to criticism from the Prosecutor General Yury Lutsenko.

“Such resistance was expected,” said Sitnic in an interview with Voice of America during the Global forum on the recovery of assets derived from crime, held in Washington.

The NEB has fewer cases than the Prosecutor General’s office, said Sytnik. “If you compare the number of cases, we have fewer cases. If we are talking about the quality of the cases, defendants who are now under investigation, of course, that the General Prosecutor’s office is clearly not up to par”, – he stressed.

“It is not about the distribution of powers. Here we are talking about the survival of the corrupt elite, which once again proves that it is impossible to investigate in Ukraine in the case of top corrupt officials and not meet resistance,” said Sitnik.

He also criticized the procedure for return of $1.5 billion, which is associated with Yanukovych, and was redirected to the state budget under the procedure of special confiscation.

“Against them (assets – ed.) a lot of questions, as they were returned. We have, as I recall, three or four criminal proceedings which have been registered on the basis of a court decision regarding the circumstances of the return of $1.5 billion based On some mythical decision of the court of Kramatorsk,” – said Sytnik.

Statement of the attorney General, according to Sytnik, can also complicate future cooperation with the FBI. “Then make some suggestions for constructive cooperation – it is very difficult to perceive them as sincere, – said Sytnik, noting, – it really negates the cooperation with our strategic partners. Partners who support us when we are at war. Why do it? Perhaps it is the instinct of survival dominates over common sense.”

“Corruption has long become a transnational phenomenon,” said Sitnic, stressing the importance of holding a Global Forum on asset recovery, the proceeds of crime. “It (corruption – ed.) it is impossible to fight if there is no proper cooperation with our international partners,” said Sitnic, noting that some countries, such as Panama and Cyprus, the exchange of information on corruption cases is not sufficient.

We will remind, the European Union accused the Prosecutor General’s office of obstructing the NEB.

In turn , the U.S. state Department made tough statements on the scandal between the NABOO and the GPU. Washington called these actions an attempt “to undermine an independent anti-corruption institutions,” which the United States and other countries provided support.

As told to the Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States Valeriy Chaly, the NABOO and the GPU will try to “reconcile” in the United States. He noted that representatives of law enforcement agencies try to merge funds in Washington.
